PWNED.

Great news, even though no one really cares! Todosantos are comin' over to NYC! I'm really excited about this and I really wanna go! I'm considering not going to Warped just so I can save the money and go see this band instead!! Yeah!! Listen... we don't get a lot of Venezuelan, Ian "I Love Life" Curtis-namechecking bands comin' round to the city, do we?

"As a safety measure, Facebook is requiring everyone to indicate their birthday." I haven't and I wonder if my account will get deleted or something. God willing, haha. And apparently MySpace went apeshit yesterday? LOL! THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PUT SPYWARE ON YOUR ADS YOU FUCKERS.

I was lurking around Antville today and it was really fun, really interesting. Like this post on online petitions (and Beyoncé). Also, I learned the dark side of Marc Webb... like he's made a lot of shitty videos. A LOT. It's like he got lucky with a few of them, and they happened to be videos for My Chemical Romance and for BRAND NEW!! I didn't know he made "Sic Transit Gloria", that was superexciting until I looked at the list of videos he's made... Ugh, I still dig him, though, those videos are seriously awesome, plus he did that one with the All-American Rejects which I finally watch in its entirety and was very good. Tyson Ritter is incredibly whiny, but you can't hate the dude because he used to be a fat kid and now he's like way hot.

Finally watched Cidade de Deus. A lot of blood. A lot a lot of blood. It's like hundreds of people die in a slum war, and we see only one person succeed, the main character. That's so depressing.

Oh, bee tee dubs, is this hilarious, or is this hilarious?!?! I was in heaven reading that.

Joint Venture.

Before I shut up about Brothers of the Head once and for all, I forgot to tell you that one of the characters was a female music journalist (LOL) who fucked one of the conjoined twins (DOUBLELOL). Hello, cliche much? Well, my most favorite parts of the movie were when the twins would start arguing and start slapping each other. It really made me laugh simply because neither brother could get away from the other when they were fighting. Damn, hot twins. So hot. Okay, yeah, I'll be quiet now.

Yesterday Rachel and I bumped into so many people we didn't even have a chance to hang out at Etherea. Apparently, we're totally down with the owner now. By this I mean that Rachel totally got the "Friends of Etherea" discount from the owner the last time we went. While we bummed around the neighborhood and waited for Boogie-Down Nicole to get out of work, we met Steve and Alison (I think) and Jennalise. We went into the grassy area at the Junkie Park and there were a lot of crusties and the area seemed nothing but uncouth but they were like, "Let's go to the park and sit in the grass!" so I tried to imagine that there weren't a lot of bugs around and that the sun wasn't beatin' on us and that there weren't lots of shifty-lookin' crusties around. When the situation started getting too sketchy and unsanitary for us, we exited the park.

Rachel and I parted ways eventually and we ended up at Kimmel waiting for time to pass. High On Life Dan showed up at Kimmel and reported he'd be going to the Danielson show. He guessed there was a 60% chance Soupjam would be there. Then it was time to meet Boogie-Down Nicole who is responsible and actually works a full-time job unlike us. It had been weeks since I'd seen her! We wandered aimlessly until it was time to go see the movie. Can I just say, there's nothing like a free movie to get your spirits up. That and hot twins.

I got stuff at work today! Yay, yay!!
- 2 really cute t-shirts that are probably too small for me because I'm totally delusional about my body image and really convinced myself I could fit into them
- pre-ordered the new TV on the Radio
- the old Vashti Bunyan on vinyl
- the most recent Ladytron album on vinyl
- the "Hard to Explain" 7-inch
- a PGMG 7-inch
- this Bishop Perry Tillis CD, which I hope is really good but I'm pretty sure it is

Peas in a Pod.

Watched Brothers of the Head last night. The directors and the twins who played the conjoined twins in the movie were there to answer a lot of stupid questions. The twins are really hot. I liked the movie okay but it's more of a "borrow from the library" movie than a "spend your lunch money for a ticket at the theater" movie. However, I should mention it was my very first time at the IFC Center and it was an A- experience! The bathroom was amazing, especially the sink! The sound wasn't absolutely blaring in the theater and the temperature was just right.

Oh yeah, the movie, it was good but as I schlepped back home I realized I had A LOT of questions about what was going on. I thought the actors were good, but I suspect it was the flow of the story that had problems. Rachel noted that this movie didn't know what kind of movie it wanted to be, and that definitely complicated things. Maybe it's because the movie had two directors. At moments it was very art school, at others it was very punk rock biopic, for the most part it was supposed to be a documentary, but they also had bits of a fake fictional movie that was based on the conjoined twins' lives, and on top of that Brothers of the Head itself is described as a mockumentary in all the reviews and blurbs in the press but there's not much mockery going about except the fact that everything about this movie is VEry VERY British and it made me LOL. Was that confusing enough?

Right. If you watch the movie, just watch it for the hot twins. And the music. I was shocked that the music wasn't bad at all. During the Q&A we were told that the more rebellious twin was influenced by Iggy Pop, but I feel that the music was more British proto-punk via glam rock. You know, descendants of T. Rex, Bowie, etc with a good dose of DIY feelin'. Wow, okay, I'm gonna end this post before I get even more pretentious.

25 July 2006

I'm a Moron, Etc.

(1) I've got two Panic! at the Disco tour posters to give away. It's for their current tour, with the Dresden Dolls. OK Go and the Hush Sound are mentioned as well. Anyway, just email me (gmail: cuddleworthy) with your address if you want it. I definitely don't want them. No, I won't sell your address or anything like that.

(2) I found out why I couldn't log in to my NYPL profile. I lost my library card. I didn't cry about it. I came close to, but I didn't really! I got my new card as soon as I realized, and what with technology bein what it is, my old account got transferred to the new one, so I can still pick up that Selena DVD I put on hold and I still have an overdue graphic novel. Hurray!

(3) So apparently I'm going to a ~*SPECIAL*~ screening of Brothers of the Head tomorrow night? I hope the info my fellow intern gave me was accurate and true? Because I really wanna see this movie? Cos those conjoined twins look way hot? I'll stop writing with question marks at the end that cause my inner voice to raise at the end of the sentence?

Edit: (4) Okay, officially supermad that I wasn't at this stupidass SF Comic Convention. Shit. Did everybody and their fucking mothers have to be there except for me?!?!

24 July 2006

22 July 2006

No Future.

Yesterday I told Rachel that there's nothing interesting in Indie music right now, that there's no point in reading music journalism because it's all boring or uninteresting or plain old news. But that's a lie, it's an absolute lie. Believe me, there's tons of awesome stuff out there. I just found it easier to say that because she doesn't care that much, you know? She already knows what she likes and she's happy with it.

Me... I'm not very happy about this. It's like I'm losing hope about everything else in my life, couldn't I at least have the music? Is it too much to ask for? At least I'm not as stuck as I was last night. I've been thinking about it really hard. It's just a matter of which direction I want to pursue. I've been worrying about it a lot recently. It's just that I've invested all this time and effort, and it wasn't to waste, but I can't linger on it forever when there's only so much music you can listen to in your life. I'm just so confused about where to go and how to go about getting into it.

I could go backwards. Get more into older stuff, I mean.

I could forget about popular music, just go into classical.

I could go more into electronic stuff.

I could abandon American pop music, just get into all sorts of stuff all over the world. All these nations, why should the US dominate them all culturally? I seriously think that we should all be watching out for Brasil. Their fuel is more efficient (I think) AND they've got a bitching music history.

I feel like I'm being so impatient, I feel like I'm itching to move on while the rest of the world is just wasting its time on the next "The" band or whatever. I'm sorry for the "The" band reference, I know it's very 2003. But I feel like I'm right and everyone else is wrong for not pushing outside of their musical comfort zones. It's just like people sit at their blogs and refresh every other minute only to watch the dick-sucking tradition of bloggers linking one another. Or they just wait for Pitchfork to release something that's above 7.5 so they can order it from that fucking Neighborhoodies music store.

C'mon, y'all! We've got this whole musical world ahead of us! Let's not be satisfied with what's handed to us! There's so much to be discovered out there!! Oh, and if you've got suggestions for new music, hell yes, I wanna hear about it. My gmail is cuddleworthy. Now off you go, seize the music.

21 July 2006

The Internets Killed the MTV Star.

Remember that list of videos Pitchfork made? Stylus made one too. And they did it better. I guess it helps that they didn't rule out any of the big directors (Gondry, Cunningham, etc.), but I really feel that Stylus were more successful because they were going for iconic, whereas Pitchfork seem to be going more for just odd or interesting images. I'm not saying the Stylus list is perfect, but I'm much happier with it.

In addition, I'm happy to report that Purpology is sort of back! Let us rejoice!

19 July 2006

Stay Young and Save Yourself.

OH MY GODDDDD!!!

NEW KINKY TRACKS STREAMING HERRRE!!

Waiting until September shall be pure torture. And then it shall be a torture trying to track this album down in an indie store and then it shall be more torture giving up and accepting that I shall have to buy this at a chain store. SIGH!

I wish they'd come to New York City! [Pout.] Well, the new tracks sound very Kinky-esque, but not in the boring way that the new Rapture track does.

I just started watching Arrested Development. The first disc was okay funny, but the second one has been REALLY funny. It's a bit of a pity that the episodes are so short. David Cross is hysterical. Also, I just have to say Ellen DeGeneres is one lucky bitch for landing herself Portia DeRossi.

By the way, I'm mad no one told me Fatrick's in this video! Do I have to discover everything by myself?

I discovered this by checking out the Fueled By Ramen YouTube account. I watched a lot of the videos, and I have to say... meh. Well, I think I like Gym Class Heroes okay! I just found it odd that it's just a rapper and his band... I mean I expected a pop-punk band like the rest of the bands on Fueled by Ramen. I was really shocked that Panic! At the Disco were actually the pop-iest band on the list (in a good way, too!). However, I find Brendon Uri(n)e to be really fucking annoying! But the actual music I found tolerable. Just hearing these bands makes me question how and why Pete Wentz has been allowed to create his own label and sign bands. It's like, I could be a better A&R person! Tch! Except for Lifetime. Holy moly.

On top of that, I'm sorta upset that Paramore are just like Avril Lavigne, maybe just a teensy bit heavier; it's disappointing because at least that Hayley girl isn't annoying like Jemina Pearl.

The one thing that really upsets me is that when I listen to these bands it feels like Brand New will never come back. I'm getting so antsy about the new album, and how much it's gonna suck, yadda yadda yadda. I know we're getting close, that they know it'll be released in the fall but it still feels like a long while.

Okay, okay, enough pop-punk talk, here's a video for shits & giggles:

I finally finished the whole Sandman series again! It was great! REally beautiful!!

Hm. I wonder if Rachel's back from Austria yet.

17 July 2006

Make it Work.

[Head scratch] I guess I forgot to mention that last week I asked my boss if I'd be allowed into the Insound party, and he was like, "Uhhh do you have a fake ID?" And I was like, "Uhhh NO" and I definitely wasn't gonna put a lot of effort into going to no stinkin' party down in Guillermoburg. Anyway, last minute, my boss was like, "Well, apparently you can go if you want" but I was too pooped and I had to go home before anything so I really didn't wanna schlep my derriere all the way back down just to stay for like an hour or two.

In other news, I got excited because I thought my Weekly Top 5 was finally all indie folks, but then I remembered that Sonic Muthafuckin' Youth haven't been on an indie in a while. Almost, though. Oh, wait, nooo. Plan B is on a major, too. 679 is part of Warner Bros. NEVER MIND then.

Or shall I say "carry on"? They showed Project Runway on network television a couple of hours ago. It was fun, but there's no Santino. Not that I've watched a single complete episode of Season 2, but there's plenty of clips on YouTube and he is hysterical.

Work was so boring today. I guess my boss saw me bumming around, plus, the girl who asked for intern help gave me a coupon on Friday and we're all like buddy-buddy (hehe), so I wasn't about to be like, "I don't wanna go on the computer". It's not that I mind dumb work, but the computer, oh! I go on the computer alllll the time, I like taking the time at work to just make boxes and stuff envelopes and wondering who will receive their contents. I have to say though, she seemed very grateful that I pitched in with the menial computer work, so I'm glad.

Last week this new dude started, and I found him very fishy and odd at first, but now I quite like him. I think he just needed a bit of time to warm up to us. I still find him on the odder side, he's one of those artist types, but he's still pretty functional in society. Last Thursday I was shocked because he was wearing a CSKA shirt, and I had to ask him where the hell he got it! Except I was thinking it was the Russian CSKA and not the Bulgarian one, which is what he was wearing. Anyway, today he was a lot more talkative and we agree that Guy Picciotto is a hottie. And he confirmed that I'd been saying "Picciotto" correctly. It's not tricky like fucking "Buscemi"!

15 July 2006

Old News.

Nothing really substantial to report. At work, the company got locked out of the building Monday morning. So a good 30 or so people were bumming on the street. This girl from my high school started working at DrillTeam. DrillTeam and Insound are sister companies, which means I'm probably going to see this girl a lot. At least I didn't hate her.

Started reading a book on Warp Records, unusual layout, has more of a coffee table book feel. I didn't know anything about Warp except for the obvious, that it focuses on electronic music, so it's been really nice to read about the label. It's also cool to read about a British place that's not London.

I listened to the new Justin Timberlake track and it's weak. As I listened to it I was like, "I think this would sound better if it was a girl vocalist" but then I realized that would make it sound like "Promiscuous" which really sucks.

I bought the CSS album which is so much stronger than a lot of the pop songs that are really popular right now. It sounds downright snooty and fun. The only thing that worries me is its longevity, but I've accepted that it'll keep me going for just a bit and I understand they're not like, fucking Rachmaninov. Oh no... I just realized... CSS sort of remind me of that first album by the Sounds... ugh why do I have to pick the worst bands to like! Be tee dubs, I still like Bonde do Role better.

I also bought The Message, which has weaker moments, but that song and "It's Nasty" are seriously amazing!

I got the Jeff Mangum live album which is okay; the sound quality leaves something to be desired but at the same time I like that it feels like a recording that some blogger kid made so he or she could get lots of hits. Plus, the song choice is excellent.

By the way, this musicsecret is so true. Moz has the best growl and I was really shocked that such a sexy sound could come out of a fuggy like him! LOLOLOLOL omg I'm gonna be stoned by Mozheads. W/evz bitches!

Last night I was flipping through the channels and I was shocked to see a young person on Charlie Rose! Not ON Charlie Rose, but I mean he was a guest on the show. Anyway, I saw this guy on the show and I was like, "Wow, cute hipsterish dude! Must watch!!" BUT THEN. I found out this guest was the head of American Apparel! I was like, "EWWW I DID NOT JUST FIND THAT PERV CUTE!!" Oh, oh! And on top of that, he's JEWISH! Why do I always like the Jews?!?!?! He's a Canadian Jew, isn't that cool? His name is Dov Charney. Anyway, Charlie Rose is a hard-hitting bastard, which is why he PASSINGLY mentioned the sexual harrassment suit in which the AA dude is involved. It really wouldn't have mattered; the dude probably can't comment on it. I think the one part that really killed me was when he's like, "I'm definitely an entrepreneur! It's in my blood!" And I was like, "Oh God, why must you make it so easy for me to make Jew jokes!" But before I really do get stoned, the AA dude totally blamed his love of money on his Jewish roots, too, which didn't do anything to kill the stereotype. Sigh.

Anyway, the dude sort of creeped me out, there was something very off about him and even though he was friendly and stuff, you could tell he's in another mentality. Like he was talking about hipster culture, but refrained from using that term, and I realized that he probably doesn't care so much about his clothes made in America, except that it's more cost effective for him. That is, I feel that he plays up the whole "no sweatshop work from 9-year-old Pakistani girls" not because he's the most kind-hearted person, but because it really doesn't make sense to him when it comes to business to move the labor outside of the country. BUT. That is just an assumption I made from his interview.

One last random thing, I watched the video for "Cheated Hearts" and I hated it. I feel like I'm in the minority and that pisses me off even more. I only got to the middle of the video when I just started crying really hard, mourning what this band used to mean to me and lamenting how much they suck. Wow, that makes me sound so fucking unstable and emo.

ANYWAY hope you suckas are having fun at fucking Siren, I don't regret not going. At least not as much as I regret not seeing LSF. Aight, pax I'm out.

07 July 2006

Wassup Haters.

Watched Wassup Rockers with Boogie-Down Nicole. It was funny! The soundtrack was pretty cool, too. It was very uh, Huntington Beach. At least that's what I imagine HB punk sounds like; I can't recall which hardcore bands are from that area.

That's one of the (many) things that was disappointing about The O.C., they could have milked that hardcore punk shit. It could have been amazing. But no. They had to go down the whole Death Cab route. Well, maybe I expected too much out of a soap opera.

Anyway, back to the movie. It really cracked me up, except for the scary parts. Like Janice Dickinson was pretty frightening in the movie. She fit perfectly in the movie. The kids were pretty cool, but I didn't really care to see all these teenagers having all these things I don't have (tight pants, sex, etc). I learned a lot though. For example, I learned that teenage boys are pretty fucking stupid. Actually, I already knew that but it was a very good reminder. Another thing I learned is that there's like a secret society of Latina maids. Also, I learned that it must suck moose balls to live in California, especially if you're too young to drive and too poor to have fast internets.

On another note, Boogie-Down Nicole and I agreed that J. Lo used to be cool. A long, looooong time ago.

And more Big Pun (RIP!) love here:

06 July 2006

Work and Other Assorted Matters.

I'm not the kind to get jealous about Stuy kids, but seriously, THIS IS SO MESSED UP! It's even cooler than when they got Clinton to speak! Jesus I'm so angry and oh gawd I think Conan O'Brien is so ASSUM! That speech is great! Ahh he's pasty-looking. LAWLZ!

So work was great. Here's my top 5 most overplayed albums at work:

(1) Pink Flag
(2) Doolittle
(3) The Runners Four
(4) London Calling
(5) Innocence & Despair: The Langley Schools Music Project

Of course, I do play plenty of Interpol, too.

I think Damian can tell I get bored just filling out orders. Today he had me count all these cute Grandaddy t-shirts and then get them ready to be shipped. Which means I folded like 100 shirts, and I must tell you, I don't think I'll ever get a job at a clothing store. Sigh! It's not that I want to work at a clothing store, but it's like such menial work, so it's disappointing that I can't handle folding 100 t-shirts. :/ Hahahahaha. I'm very happy to be working in a place where they trust me.

And hey, Insound is having a party! Here are the details (from the Insound mailing list):

What: Insound’s Return of Shorts 2: The Beach
Where: Supreme Trading, 213 N 8th St, Brooklyn, NY 11211
When: Thursday, July 13th. 8pm
Who: Oh No! Oh My!, The Big Sleep, Professor Murder
How Much: $2.00 if you wear shorts, $5.00 if you chicken out
What Else: Free Sparks from 8-9pm
How Old: 21+

Hopefully I'll get to go?

On another note, if you're on the Insound mailing list you'll have noted that Tiny Mix Tapes contributed a list of albums we love. It's like my worlds have collided. The albums are on discount so spend all your money on all that sweet shit! And get this, there'll be another list coming up in the next email! So look out for it and check out the TMT recommendations! Especially the wild noise shit!!

I just listened to The Promise Ring, Jawbreaker and Lifetime for the first time. Just bits here and there that I found on YouTube. The first two didn't impress me that much, but I did like Lifetime! Also, I heard a bit of Cap'n Jazz and I wanna hear more of that. So I'm gonna have to research this matter further.

REMEMBER KIDDIES! Tomorrow is the Juana Molina show at South Street Seaport! Be there or... don't be there! Cos I might be there unless I'm not and I go watch Wassup Rockers instead--je ne sais pas.

05 July 2006

Try Again.

Okay, I cannot believe I've been wasting my time listening to "Dance, Dance". I can't believe I just downloaded Ultra Blue by Utada Hikaru and didn't listen to it until now. I cannot believe I listened to Loose that much. And while we're on the same topic (Timbaland), I cannot believe I listened to Exodus that much, either! But I still like Exodus, I'm mostly ashamed about Loose. What a fucking waste of my time. Ultra Blue is such a good pop album! Maybe the best I've heard since Taller in More Ways. Oh wait, maybe since the Robyn album, I'm not sure. Heh. But don't let me do all the talking, here's a video for "Keep Tryin'":

Also, it helps that Utada Hikaru has a nice voice. I have to say though, the second half of the album dips a bit in quality (at least from this first listening session), and I get really annoyed when J-Pop or K-Pop songs mix English into the lyrics within the same phrase. Dunno if I explained that clearly. Anyway, just track the music down, it's really good.

I finished reading City of Glass, which I didn't realize was an adaptation of a novel. I read it in graphic novel form. It was such a mindfuck! It was so fucking meta! I thought the artwork was fantastic! I might have to read the actual novel, but the artwork was so beautiful, just very clever and intricate. I thought it fit the story very well. The story itself was wonderful because it talks about language and there's a lot of intertextuality so it really kept me on my toes.

I also finished Mother, Come Home, and I seriously... maybe it's a bit too naive of me, but I... I expected a lot of cryin' and huggin' and good, ol'-fashioned male bondin'. I didn't except the BIG TURN in the story to be such a... I don't know, I didn't expect it to be like that. I think what I liked most was the way the story is told, sometimes very stylized, sometimes very childlike. It made the story a bit more complex than most stories. Shit, what confuses me is that this is only one book in a series? Or something, I'm not sure. But yeah, I think I'd recommend it. Maybe even more so than La Perdida, because it's a bit creepy, sort of like little kids in scary movies.

Speaking of "scary" movies, is that new M. Night Shyamalam movie out yet? I want to read the spoiler. See, I tend to read the spoilers for movies I never intend to watch, many of which are so-called "scary" movies. So yeah! If anyone knows how it goes, do tell. Haha.

EDIT: (1) Gawker got a facelift; I think it looks nice and clean. (2) For those who care, I spotted one of those ghastly bookbag ads that the Misshapers modeled for. I was on Bowery. Seriously, so tacky. I'm all for making money, but couldn't they do it in a more fashionable way? I guess I shouldn't expect so much from hipster scum. Sigh!

04 July 2006

Holiday, Y'all!

Macbeth
My holiday weekend's been good. On Saturday night, thanks to Doris, I got to see Macbeth, which is this year's production for Shakespeare in the Park. Now, I've never read Macbeth, so I listened really carefully to the dialogue so I could understand what was going on. The only thing I knew about Macbeth: the witches' rhyme thingy, which I'd read in Just as Long as We're Together. And I though Lady Macbeth was supposed to be this force to be reckoned with, but it wasn't like that in the play. The play was pretty good, if a bit like a glossy music video. I'm not gonna complain cos it was free. Also, it was strangely set around World War I. I just don't get why.

After the show Kat, Rachel and I were waiting for Doris to get out of work (she's an usher there). It was really dark but there was this famliar woman standing around, and I asked out loud, "Is that Julia Stiles?" And Kat stared a bit, and then these women in front of us were like "OMAGAWD" so we were like, "Aight, it's Julia Stiles". I thought her dress was nice. No one bothered her, really.

While we walked to the train, we passed by this crazy hobo dude who yelled out at us, "Hey, miss! Miss!" This guy riding his bicycle was passing by and yelled at the hobo, "Leave them alone!" And the crazy hobo was just like, "Okay" and kept quiet!! Then I was like, "Let's go to the Quirowitz" place, but Kat and Doris only stayed for like two seconds and I don't think they enjoyed those two seconds very much, so I felt bad about wasting their time and money.

I came home Sunday morning and I wasted it with sleep and food.

MTV K
Look at this! SuChin Pak speaking Konglish, LOL! Check out the vid on the right with SuChin's intro for the first video. I actually sort of wanna watch MTV K, if only for the novelty factor! It's just that I can't tell how long they'll be airing this channel? Will they be able to last, or will they pull the plug on it once Hallyu loses its magic?

Interesting fact, I thought "Hallyu" was a bastardized version of "Hollywood", but it really does mean "Korean Wave" in like Chinese characters or summat.

Juana Molina
Yesterday I went to the Bowery Ballroom to do an interview with Juana Molina. She was very pretty. I was very awkward with my interrogation. I showed her my Mafalda book, and she was like, "Oh wow!" It made me happy.

(Straight) Ladies, Take Note.
I went to the Mid-Manhattan library to return this essay book, and ended up taking out FIVE items! Why do I do this?!?! I read Marjane Satrapi's Embroideries, which was like, Sex and the Iranian City. Except there wasn't much of the city as it was just about sex, hahaha.

Anyway, if any ladies are looking for action, I only have one word: comics. Srsly. Try it. While I was looking at the Graphic Novels section in the library, this dude just comes up next to me and he's like, "So this is where the good stuff is, huh?" I wholeheartedly said "Yes!" ...And then I proceeded to back away since he was a bit older.

But get this, when I walked out of the library I happened to walk in the same pace as this cute dude who was like maybe in his 20s and I noticed he was like sort of staring at my books, which I was carrying in my arms. He noticed I noticed he was staring at my books (and by "books", I really mean books, nothing dirty, HAHA!), so he was like, "Hey, is that a Chris Ware book?" I ALMOST DIED! BEST PICKUP LINE EVERRR!! WHAT A GREAT BOOST TO MY EGO!!! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL Okay I'll stop. But seriously, I was so amused because the picture on the back cover didn't really look like something by Ware. Anyway, since I'm so witty and charming and eloquent, I showed him the booked and replied, "Uh, no, it just looked interesting." WTFFFFF? That's all I could come up with?!?!?! If you think about it, like really really hard, what I really meant was, "No, it's not a Chris Ware book so it probably isn't as cool, but it still looked interesting enough to take out of the library." For those of you who are wondering (hi Doris!), the book is Mother, Come Home, and I only picked it up because it seemed one of those angsty, weepy comic books that I tend to like. Anyway, I was very flattered the dude talked to me!

Superman Returns
Today I went to see Superman and it was awesome! No, not as good as Batman Begins. It was simple and linear, but it was pretty cute and I thought it had a lot of heart. It was really interesting, there was hardly any blood in the movie but the action parts were exciting and the effects were incredibly well-done. Only like one person dies, and it's really surprising to see who does the killing! Moreover, I really liked the sets and stuff. It seemed like it was simultaneously set in 2006 and 1936. It was pretty awesome. Also, I really liked Lois Lane! Actually, I liked the entire cast, they were all cool, even the kid, and I was like, "LOLLERSK8S @ KUMAR PLAYING A BAD GUY!!!" Much better than that other action movie James Marsden was in this year!

Elizabeth U. Battles The Scenester Girls.

So I got to the venue and I just went up to the security dude, "I'm from TMT, I'm here to do an interview," and he just mumbled and pointed to a side door and I was like, "Um... okay?" So I just went to the side door and it was sorta open and... I waltzed inside like I owned the place. And as soon as I saw someone I was like, "Help?" And he was pretty helpful, just told me to go to the main stage, and when I did, I think it was the French Kicks setting up. I just stood there and was like, "Hi". HAHA. Okay, so then I go back out and I'm about to call the publicist when someone shows up and is like, "Hey, we don't know nothing about no stinkin' interview, we just need to make sure, nobody tells us nothing, etc, etc, SO COULD YOU PLEASE WAIT OUTSIDE WHILE WE VERIFY" LOLZ! I was kicked out of the venue quite calmly and politely, and I was left on the street to fend for myself against this handful of little scenester girls. ZOMGZ. I was so scared. They were really close to the front waiting for doors to open, and I stayed back a few feet away. As I waited I called the publicist going like, "I got kicked out, help me PLZ". One of them girls waddles over to me, she heard me earlier before I snuck into the venue that I was doing an interview, and she's like, "What publication do you work for?" I think she was being polite and stuff in case I was someone important. (After all, I may look geeky but Jon Pareles is even geekier. You never know.) I said, "Tiny Mix Tapes", and I said it loud, cos I'm proud. And she was wearing these shades, but they weren't that dark, and I could tell she had no idea what I was talking about. And she's like have you talked to their publicist and I'm like, "Not on the phone, we've been exchanging emails." She asked me who the publicist was, and I said Karen. And she was like, "Oh, right!" giving me this look like she totally knew who I was talking about. By that I mean she really DID know that Karen was Karen Plus One. She didn't make a big fuss, but it was still a fuss, so you could tell. Anyway, I ceased to amuse said girl, so she went back to giggling and stupid shit with her posse, and I kept my distance. Then the dude who kicked me out looks out the main entrance and points at me.

"You! What's your name!"
I knew this was no time to tell him that my name IS "U." LOL.
I responded, "Elizabeth."

He motions me over to him, to come in, and I strutted up to the door, past those annoying girls. I'm assuming Karen sorted me out? Maybe not. But then as I was walking in, one of these girls was like, "Hey, this other girl has an interview, too!" I didn't believe them. I don't think he did, either. He's like, "What for?" And the girls are like, "The Big Takeover" And I was like, LOLLERCAUST, if y'all gonna lie you could have picked a cooler zine!! And now that I think about it, Jack Rabid really disliked the first Futureheads album! So I'm like OMGWTF?

The thing is, in the end they weren't really lying, because a few minutes after I started stuttering in front of Jaff, this girl came into the room with Barry to do an interview. HAHA! Anyway, I was very awkward and nervous during the thing, he was quite nice and charming and I understood him just fine, and he'd never heard of the Unicorns and he wasn't feeling very confident about England in the World Cup. But yeah, I'll transcribe when I get home, and submit it, you'll see what he said. It was such a short interview. Time restraints. It's just as well, I was so nervous. It's hard to get all buddy-buddy within 15 minutes, but I got some really interesting answers out of him.

After the interview I shimmied on out of the venue and waited for Rachel to show up. We had pizza and waited for Boogie-Down Nicole to show up. Then I gave her her ticket, which I actually never used for the Crumpler Bags thing, which was for the best I think, and then I went up to the guestlist dude and I'm like, "I'm on the list?" And he goes, "Which list?" And in my head I'm like, FUCK, I KNEW I SHOULD HAVE ASKED! I'm such a n00b at this shit it's pathetic. Can I get a LOL? Anyway, he asked, "Who put you on the list?" I'm like, "Karen", and he's like, "Who does she work for?" For some reason I TOTALLY blanked out! It doesn't matter if I'd said the PR company cos the same dude who kicked me out/let me in earlier was like, "It's the Vagrant list", and he let me in and I said "I'm sorry for the trouble yo" and he was like, "It's aight". No, I'm not quoting anything verbatim.

I'm also supposed to review the show (which is why I sort of won't do it here, other than to say it was awesome and fun), so I had to write down the whole setlist. The problem is that I wasn't sure about the new song titles. I didn't know the words, either. The brilliant thing is, they blew up the liner notes as the backdrop for their show, and the liner notes basically show the lyrics to the songs in a newspaper layout. As a journalism student, when I saw it I almost died. Anyway, so I actually took advantage of the blown-up backdrop with the lyrics. It really helped and I got all the song names, with 95% certainty. I actually felt bad because I couldn't remember the title for one of the OLD songs! Haha, I fail at life.

There were no sightings of Elijah Wood.

After the show we bumped into Cameron, how surprising, huh? We recapped on the show, and you know, he's all like, "Well, they were better when they played [insert your choice of 20-person capacity venue]." Haha, I'm exaggerating. But we agreed it was a good time. Well, if you missed the Futureheads last night, they're gonna play Motherfucker (source: Brooklynvegan) for the 4th of July party. Except the party's actually on July 3rd, take note! So go check them out and see if Ross and Justine D break edge!!

And now off to the library to pay my fines. Oh lord. Later: ACME Cajun food, and Shakespeare in the Park. I have one extra ticket, anyone wanna come with? ALSO! Hi to Miss Modernage! Thanks for the hot linkage action!! :D
